  • Alternative Wedding Table Decor Ideas for a Unique Twist

Today we have a fab guest post from Matthew Rycraft, one of the leading wedding photographers in North West England. He is drawing on his wedding expertise to provide some fresh, alternative wedding table decor ideas. Some DIY ideas. Some you may want to get the experts in to achieve. All totally fabulous-of course.

Do you have any idea how you want to decorate your tables? Are you looking for some alternative table decor ideas that guests will remember for a long time to come?

In the grander scheme of a wedding day, table decorations might seem like they need to take a back seat to everything else the bride and groom have to think about. However,  decorations for the tables should be given just as much consideration as the venue, the flowers and even the bride’s dress.

The items adorning the tables are some of the most important. After all, bunting and banners, and quirkier decorations like Polaroid collages or chalkboards bearing cute quips make a grand impression on guests as they enter and get settled.

Table decorations are what guests are faced with as they relax listening to speeches or tucking into a hearty three-course meal. In other words, during a large and relatively sober portion of the night, guests will find themselves looking at whatever you have decided to lay out.

From a photographer’s standpoint, carefully considered table decorations are great because they form a highly visible and attractive backdrop to snapshots taken during the meals and speeches.

If you find yourself swamped by other planning duties, here are four decorative ideas to consider:

    Alternative Wedding Table Decor Ideas

    1. Flower/candle mashup

Flowers and candles have probably been staple features of nuptial proceedings for centuries, if not longer. Candles symbolise positivity and love. In practical terms they can provide rich, invigorating scents. Flowers stand for life and new beginnings. Have you ever thought about combining the two?

Take a candle jar and wrap it with a coloured elastic band or some attractive ribbon. Slot flowers through the ribbon or band so that they frame the opening of the jar.

    2. Origami place cards

Instead of using standard pieces of card to denote where you want each guest to sit, try making tiny origami objects. You don’t have to use standard white paper either. In fact, origami paper, which is a little thinner than the printing paper we’re familiar with, comes in a range of colours. You’re sure to find something that complements your chosen scheme.

    3. Literature lanterns

For those who enjoy reading novels or poetry, there’s a cheap yet easy way to slip your love of the written word into your reception décor. Make literature-themed table lanterns by wrapping pages from the books you enjoy around candle jars. Purchasing cheap ex-library copies is recommended. Cut out shapes like hearts or table numbers in the paper so that the light shines through.

    4. Wild flowers

It’s hard to imagine a wedding without flowers. To complement the main floral arrangements, you can save money by going out yourself and picking wild flowers. These can then be placed in jars, set in bunches or scattered on the tablecloths.

Just be sure to observe the ethical and legal considerations. Outlines can be found on the website of the UK’s Wild Flower Society.
