  • Dress Styles for Boyish Figures – Cotswold Bride

So today we have another style advice instalment to suit different body shapes.Today we have asked Ali from Cotswold Bride to offer her expertise to find perfect wedding dress styles for brides with a boyish figure. So if you are a straight up and down lady, read on..

What designers do you stock and why did you choose each of these designers?

We stock So Sassi – By Sassi Halford, Novia D’art, Mia Solano, Fara Sposa & Georgina Rose. We also are just about to take delivery of a new range from Cathleen Jia – A fabulous Australian designer that has chosen Cotswold Bride to be the exclusive stockist within the UK, which is very exciting.

    Catherine Jia

We have chosen each of the designers because together they provide such a variation on style, from simple and elegant to dramatic and fun and everything in between.   The designers all use beautiful fabrics and have a fantastic eye for detail and quality. Within the ranges we offer vast flexibility with services such as made to measure, split sizing and with Georgina Rose and Cathleen Jia, a bespoke design and creation service for brides to work with the designers to create their very own, perfect dress.  (Yes – Cathleen Jia will come across from Australian for this).

    Rachel by Georgina Rose

Our Designers also provide inspiration from around the world, with 2 of our designers being UK based, 2 Spanish, 1 American and of course 1 all the way from Australia.

What sort of experience should a bride expect when coming to visit your shop?

We understand this is a huge part of your wedding preparations and while some ladies love shopping for their dress others find it a little daunting. Cotswold Bride was created to ensure you enjoy the experience and are made to feel special and relaxed.  You’ll be welcomed with a glass of champagne, fruit juice, Tea or Coffee and we’ll help you find the perfect dress that makes you look and feel fantastic. We will consider many aspects when helping you in your search such as your venue, your likes/dislikes and your body shape and colouring.

We also offer a “Colour & Style my Day” service for those brides wanted to bring along their wedding party to have their colour and style analysed by our in-house consultant to ensure the entire group is looking fantastic while understanding everyone’s best colour and shapes before selecting colour schemes, bridesmaid dresses and mother of bride & groom outfits  (This is a full day experience and probably needs a blog all of it’s own to fully tell you about it).

How would you define a “boyish figure”?

When you think of a boyish figure words like Straight & Athletic come to mind. People with a boyish figure are likely to have a smaller bust, narrow hips and an undefined waist.  These ladies can look absolutely gorgeous and feminine if they wear the right outfit. Just look at Meg Ryan,  Cameron Diaz & Keira Knightly.

What style of dress suits a bride with a boyish figure?

When looking for a dress for a boyish figure, you want to add curves and define the waist. You  also have to consider the style/character of the bride too so it will vary with the individual but dresses with a peplum can add curves to the hip while adding a belted waist band can accentuate a waist.  An empire line can add fullness to the bust and wouldn’t cling to the body therefore disguising those straight lines. You can create the illusion of curves with dresses that cinch in at the waist or have a bodice and a full skirt to create a more hourglass figure.

The peplum on Bianca by So Sassi adds shape to a boyish figure.

The slightly contrasting belt of this Fara Sposa gown creates the illusion of a waist, the fitted bodice accentuates your slim hips and thighs and the flaring of the fishtail adds much needed shape.

What style of dress should a bride with a boyish figure avoid?

Boyish figures should avoid dresses that are too straight and shapeless, it’s important to create the illusion of curves.

    Catherine Jia

Are there any fabrics that a bride with a boyish figure should avoid?

Try to avoid stiff  or heavy fabric. These fabrics can be a too structured with little movement.  Look for soft draped materials such as Chiffon, Lace and Tulle.

The contrasting panel in Carmen by So Sassi accentuates the waist and the softly draping tulle is the perfect fabric.

Have you any tips for brides searching for their perfect dress?

Definitely consider taking your bridal party, or just you and Mum/Sister to a colour and style session as this will ensure you know what colours, shapes and styles suits you and your group best. (Also this knowledge will be with you forever so its a brilliant investment for the future, not just your wedding).

Find a boutique that make you feel relaxed and confident in both their service and their expertise.

Ensure you are aware of the price range before booking your appointment to ensure you will not be disappointed when you get there and ask about additional cost such as alterations. We include all alterations, to ensure perfect fit, on all of our new dresses but in some places this can be as much as £250/£300.

Have a look for recommendations – See what other brides are saying they have experienced when looking for their dress. If people have taken the time to give feedback, in most cases they will have had a brilliant or really bad time and this information is equally important.

Make sure you give yourself time. Dresses often take 12-16 weeks to arrive and many other wedding plans can’t be made until your dress has been chosen.

Thankyou to Cotswold Bride for their fab advice and beautiful dresses. are you in need of wedding style advice? Please share your design dilemmas with us and we will endeavour to find a solution. Bye for now, Jenny.
