  • Honeymoons – Quiet Retreat v City Break

Today I am thinking of hot sunny beaches, balmy evenings, cocktails on a veranda, the smell of orange blossom in the air, good food, good company….sleep.

Yes I am dreaming of holidays but alas for me the only thing on the horizon is not the sun, but 4 days at Glastonbury and a week in a caravan in Wales in August. So instead I will live vicariously through the blog and write about honeymoons instead, with a little help from guest blogger, Lianne Nichols.

Today is all about choosing the TYPE of honeymoon you fancy and not travelling too far afield. I am all for a laze on the beach far far away but in the height of the summer I just can’t cope with the heat and turn into a sweaty, grumpy monster and I know I am not alone. Not only that but after organising a wedding for goodness knows how long, the thought of a long haul flight straight away may not appeal. So Lianne has a few suggestions that may even be a little closer to home and can still be a romantic break for two.

For those who want to have a honeymoon at home or close by, the decision of where exactly to go can be an ongoing battle. You need to find something you both want to do or you have to do a little bit of compromising, which I’m sure neither of you want to do. But worry no more as you are guided through the places you could go to, what you could do and how much it’ll be. We’ll give you the pros and the cons to help you decide on whether you want to go to a quiet retreat or a big city break for your honeymoon.

    Quiet retreats:

You could go to a beach if it is spring or summer, activities could include such things as surfing, walks on the beach, swimming, rock climbing and scouring the markets they may have. Places such as Cornwall are great places to go, but during the summer they will be a little busier and if you want a room with a view it’ll cost you (but not too much). The initial cost of a hotel wouldn’t be very much but activities will all cost money, so the more you want to do, the more it’ll be. It takes a little organizing but it can be very romantic and serene.

A forest cabin is a great way to seclude yourselves and immerse yourself into the wilderness. Some retreats have small activities you can do as a couple such as quad biking, bicycle rides, nature walks and archery. Retreats like this tend to have one overall cost with some or all activities included in the price, making it fairly affordable, still much cheaper than a holiday abroad.

For those who just want to sit in and do nothing, you could find a b&b or hotel that is far away from cities or people, somewhere nice and quiet with wonderful views. You can find places like this in Wales and Scotland’s Highlands, but make sure you have everything you need if you are in the middle of nowhere. Getaways like this are extremely cost effective as you make your own fun, but be aware that you may get a little bit bored.

     City Breaks:

We start with the countries capital, London. Having a honeymoon here may seem a little odd but can actually work out better than you think. With hundreds of places you can see or visit and activities to the brim, you are not likely to get bored here. It does come at a price and because of it being the capital, all of the activities are costly too, although there are lots of free museums and art galleries that you can visit if on a tight budget.

Just across the pond we have France and Amsterdam. You can get a ferry or you can get on the Eurostar to get here and it is very reasonably priced and quick to get to, even flights to these countries are a steal. Both are full of amazing culture and sights you can see all for free! The history in both is very rich and both have unique and fun activities. Because they use Euros, it actually works out cheaper than most honeymoon trips and retreats.

So there are Lianne’s suggestions for honeymoons that are not too far away. My idea of heaven right now would be a log cabin on the edge of a beach with no phone or computer access and someone to wait on me hand and foot, with a hot tub and unlimited massages. Bit much? I can dream…..Bye for now, Jenny.
