  • Saturday Celebrity Style – The Kennedy Dynasty

Today I’m just going to take you on a journey through the weddings of American Royalty-the Kennedy family. A veritable family dynasty and differing wedding styles -sleek clean & contemporary to huge frilly dresses, classic timeless glamour and no nonsense style. Which is your number one? Who is your favourite couple? Which style do you like the best? Who has made the fashion faux pas?

Jacqueline Bouvier and John Fitzgeralrd Kennedy married on 12 September 1953. Jacqueline wore a dress of ivory tissue silk, with a portrait neckline, fitted bodice, and a bouffant skirt embellished with bands of more than fifty yards of flounces.

Her rosepoint lace veil, worn first by her grandmother Lee, was draped from a tiara of lace and orange blossoms. Jacqueline wore a choker of pearls and a diamond bracelet that was a gift from the groom. The bride’s bouquet was of pink and white spray orchids and gardenias

JFK’s sister, Patricia married movie star Peter Lawford after a whirlwind romance on 24 April 1954 at the Plaza Hotel in New York.

The Plaza Hotel ballroom “resembled a country garden “decorated with pink snapdragons, tulips, delphinium, and branches of flowering dogwood.” They had a five-tier wedding cake “decorated with wedding bells, doves, swans, roses and lilies of the valley.

JFK’s brother, Robert Kennedy, married Ethel Skakel, on 17 June 1950.

Ethel’s wedding dress and bridal party gowns were created by noted New York City fashion designer Mamie Conti. The couple went on to have 11 children, one of whom was born after Robert’s assassination in 1968.

JFK’s niece, maria Shriver, married  movie star/ California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on 26 April 1986. Arnold dressed formal and wore tails. Maria’s wedding dress was designed by Marc Bohan of Christian Dior. It was a pearl-edged white satin-and-lace gown with an eleven-foot train. The bouquet Maria carried had roses and French posies.

Maria’s maid of honor was Caroline Kennedy. A former Mr. Universe, Dr. Franco Columbu, was best man. The nine bridesmaids were in silk moire gowns in shades of blue, pink, and violet.

Caroline Kennedy, JFK’s daughter, married Edwin Schlossberg on 19 July 1986 . Her mum, Jackie Kennedy, planned the wedding.

Caroline’s wedding attire was a white silk organza gown with a long waist, short sleeves, a twenty-five-foot train, and rounded neck designed by Carolina Herrera. The bodice of the wedding dress was appliqued with embroidered white shamrocks. She wore a tulle veil and carried a bouquet of white phaleonopsis orchids. Caroline wore diamond and pearl earrings that were a gift to her mother from her father.

Edward wore a Willi Smith designed blue linen suit with a silver linen tie. His boutonniere was made of stephapotis.

JFK’s son, John  Kennedy Jnr, married Carolyn Bessette  were married on September 21, 1996 on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Their wedding was private and secret in an effort to elude the media.

Carolyn’s wedding dress was designed by Narciso Rodriguez.

And the latest Kenenedy wedding? Patrick Kennedy, JFK’s nephew, and his wife Amy, were married at the Kennedy family compound on 15 July 2011.

Wow how do that family keep up with who is marrying who, who is related and in what way? I love most of the wedding styles here-although those 1980s weddings need glossing over-what the heck are Caroline’s bridesmaids wearing??
