  • Wedding Bands – The Players Funny First Dance Stories

We all have a funny story to tell from a wedding we have been to, and the more weddings we attend, the more likely it is to see something funny, unusual or downright weird.Well today’s guest bloggers have seen more than most. They are  The Players, a small but perfectly formed band from Yorkshire. In their own words they firmly believe that size doesn’t matter…

They specialise in small and intimate events; as a four-piece band can fit into venues where larger show bands couldn’t, or might risk overwhelming the audience. However, they are equally at home on larger stages! They have played everywhere from castles to marquees, and from hotels to rock clubs. Individually, they have played all over the UK, Europe and the USA.

“Our philosophy is very simple; we want our clients to have a great time, with the minimum amount of fuss. We’re happy to work as much or as little with every client to ensure our performance adds something unique to their event. It’s not just another gig for us, it’s your night.”

So who better to share some funny first dance stories with us. Can you top them?

This gig was only last year, and it had all been arranged via our drummer – which should have been warning enough. We had been asked to perform the couple’s first dance, ‘Chasing Cars’ by Snow Patrol, and as far as we were concerned, that was it. As we were setting up, I saw another bloke coming coming in carrying what looked like loads of stands. We just assumed he was the DJ setting up his lights and got on with our soundcheck. He was still at it when we finished and headed for our dressing room, so all we did was the usual ‘alright mate’ and kept going.

When it came time to play, we headed back to the room and there this pole at the opposite end of the room to us. Still in the dark, we cracked a few jokes among ourselves about pole dancers and then, lo and behold, a very pretty women in a bikini appeared..We started the tune and, instead of the newly weds dancing, this woman performed a very slow pole dance. Consequently, we played the whole song to the back of the audiences heads…

It turned out that the bride and a few of her friends pole danced as a form of exercise, and there were laughs all round. But we were very taken aback. Plus, it’s a really hard act to follow…

Another that really sticks in my mind was from about 4-5 years ago. The first dance was ‘time of my life’ from Dirty Dancing. The couple were doing it to the original track rather than the band, and we were supposed to start straight away afterwards. Anyway, the newly weds proceeded to pull out the full dance routine including the run/jump finale… everyone must have got some great shots of them, with the band in the background completely open mouthed…

Finally for today, the bride and groom thought it would be funny to wind their friends up and tell them in all seriousness that their first dance was going to be Bryan Adams ‘Everything I Do’ – which in their minds was the ultimate ‘cheesy’ first dance. All of their friends thought they were joking and wouldn’t go through with it, so the couple actually got the DJ to start playing the song, and they began to dance.

At this point, all their friends who’d been having a laugh about the song suddenly looked really sheepish (actually, most looked confused) because they thought this really WAS the first dance and they’d been slagging it off… Anyway, it had barely got through the first few lines when the bride and groom ran up to the DJ screaming and shouting for him to take this &**(%%% rubbish off (he was in on the joke) – the groom then turned to the band and said ‘you lot play something’ – and we launched into the actual first dance as arranged…

Double irony: I’d played the same venue years before and the first dance that night really WAS Bryan Adams…

Thankyou to the lovely Paddy from The Players for sharing these stories with us. So have you got a first dance story that beat these from The Players? Would love to hear them, after all it’s your blog so please get involved. Bye for now, jenny.

One Response to “Wedding Bands – The Players Funny First Dance Stories”

    1. It’s is becomming more and more popular for people to do strange things during the first wedding dance, from the groom and his groomsmen doing a performance to the bride and bridesmaids having a go at it. I think it’s great because clearly there has been a lot of thought and planning gone into it and I think it sets a really good mood for the night.
